German and Swiss Rotarians help land mine victims

One leg have been amputated above the knee

Our activities are the following:

Many millions of anti-personnel mines are today buried and ready to explode in more than 80 countries.  Installing them was easy.  The mines are cheap and very effective, which is why they continue to be used by some countries, despite being banned by International humanitarian laws.  As a result, there are some 20,000 new victims each year in the world of which two-thirds need prostheses.  With children the prostheses need to be replaced every 6-12 months due to growth, adults every 2-4 years because of wear.

The struggle against anti-personnel mines is on three levels: banning the mines, de-mining and aid to mine victims.

The Ottawa Treaty a Convention on the prohibition of the use, stockpiling, production and transfer of antipersonnel mines has already been signed by 170 countries and ratified by 156.

Some nations have still not signed the Mine Ban Treaty.

De-mining takes place in difficult and dangerous conditions, often manually.  Several nations and the UN finance de-mining.

The MINE-EX Foundation Rotary Districts 1980, 1990 and 2000 CH/FL is concentrating its efforts on the third level of the struggle against mines:

AID TO MINE VICTIMS. This is being done in one of the most heavily affected country: Cambodia.

Other mine affected countries in the world benefit from the aid of other Rotary Clubs help.
